This is the feature defense attorneys react to first. Not the Cockpit. Not the worksheet. The absence of the download queue itself. The platform retrieved a large evidence corpus from the benchmark matter into one organized Drive evidence tree under the right matter, without anyone sitting at a workstation watching a progress bar twelve hours at a time. Every other feature of The Evidence Orchestrator reads off the record this lane assembles.

The current manual posture

A Staff Day, Per Felony, In Download Management Alone.

The current manual posture for a defense firm receiving Axon evidence through a District Attorney’s eDiscovery portal is one-file-at-a-time, real-time download, repeated for every file in the share, performed by a human at a workstation. A felony case with twelve hours of body-camera video, a dozen photographs, and several audio recordings can consume an entire staff day or more in download management alone, before any review work has begun. The work is not skilled. It is sitting at a screen, clicking a file name, watching a progress bar, waiting for a file to finish, clicking the next one. If they walk away and the download fails, the file restarts from zero. If the portal session times out, they re-authenticate and start over. A misdemeanor with two hours of body camera is half a morning. A heavy felony with multiple co-defendants can be two or three days, across the same staff member, with no marginal output beyond a folder of files at the end. And then the review work begins.

The automation spine

What The Lane Actually Does.

01

Watches The Portal

The lane watches the relevant eDiscovery portals. Bexar County’s BexarEIS portal for Bexar work, with the same pattern adaptable to other counties as those connectors are reviewed. It reads notices, identifies new shares, and matches incoming shares to the firm’s active matters.

02

Submits The Request

When a share is available, the lane submits the eDiscovery request through the official portal under firm-staff authentication. It does not bypass DA-side access controls. It uses the firm’s own credentials, on the firm’s own allowlist, doing what a staff member at the same workstation would do.

03

Monitors Processing

Portal-side processing takes time. Sometimes hours, sometimes overnight. The lane monitors status rather than asking a person to refresh a page. When the portal flags the share as available, the lane proceeds. When the portal returns an error, the lane logs the error and surfaces it on the matter’s status view.

04

Downloads Into The Right Matter

Files are written into the correct matter’s Drive evidence tree under Client Files 2026 / Client / Matter / Evidence, the canonical folder shape. Rather than into a generic dump folder anyone might mistake for another case. No orphan folders. No misfiled videos. The lane preserves Drive IDs and URLs on the matter record.

05

Reconciles With A Practice-Management System

The lane reconciles the incoming file inventory with the practice-management system’s matter identity, client identity, case numbers, and matter ownership. The Drive folder is linked to the correct matter in the practice-management system. The matter’s evidence-status note updates.

06

Status View, Not A Queue

The firm does not get a queue to babysit. It gets a status view. What was requested, what was received, what is in flight, what failed. The view is read at the firm’s convenience, not at the portal’s pace. The work that used to demand a staff member’s day is now a glance at a status panel before the morning meeting.

The benchmark metric

A Large Evidence Corpus Into One Organized Drive Tree, Overnight.

On the benchmark run, the lane retrieved a large evidence corpus into the matter’s Drive evidence tree in a single unattended overnight pass. The composition was body-camera video files, audio recordings (911 calls and witness interviews), photographs, documents, and reports. The system was idle on the pilot firm’s desk by morning.

  • a large evidence corpus retrieved in a single unattended overnight pass.
  • 0 staff hours at a download workstation.
  • material review time reduction documented internally across the matter.
  • Throughput estimate, pending instrumented measurement on the next benchmark-shape run: approximately 90 to 120 minutes of pipeline processing per hour of MP4 body-camera evidence. A typical Bexar misdemeanor finishes before the firm opens. A heavy felony finishes before the morning calendar review.

A clear boundary

The Lane Operates Inside The Firm’s Authentication And Allowlist. It Does Not Bypass DA-Side Access Controls.

Automation, Not Circumvention

The Axon Download Orchestration Lane runs under the firm’s own portal credentials, on the firm’s own allowlist, doing what a staff member at the same workstation would do. Faster, unattended, with a clean audit row for every action. It does not bypass DA-side access controls. It does not access shares the firm has not been granted. It does not store credentials in the browser; server-side credential handling keeps secrets out of the user’s session.

The Implemented Guardrails

Allowlisted casework access. Row-level-security policies on the matter records the lane writes to. Server-side credential handling for portal authentication. Audit-ready records for every download the lane performs. The platform is not SOC 2 or CJIS or HIPAA compliant unless a formal audit exists. Any production deployment for a new firm requires that firm’s security review before launch.

What The Recovered Hours Become

The hours that used to be spent at a download workstation become hours spent reviewing what the State produced. In the Cockpit, with the AI Worksheet Panel and the Recommended Clips queue reading off the record the lane assembled. The download lane is the front door. The rest of the platform is the room behind it.

Why This Matters Beyond The Firm That Uses It

Gideon v. Wainwright, 372 U.S. 335 (1963), established the Sixth Amendment right to counsel for those charged with crimes who cannot afford to hire it. A well-resourced firm can sit a staff member at a download workstation for two days. The court-appointed lawyer, the public defender, and the solo attorney with the indigent caseload cannot. The Axon Download Orchestration Lane is the surface that recovers those days. Equal access to the kind of media management the State already conducts on its side is what the Sixth Amendment promises.

Why This Matters

An Entire Staff Day, Recovered For The Matter.

The current manual posture for defense firms receiving Axon evidence is one-file-at-a-time, real-time, performed by a human at a workstation. A felony with twelve hours of body-camera video can consume an entire staff day in download management before any review begins. Under the 2023 National Public Defense Workload Study, the recommended ceiling per felony case jumped from 13.9 hours (1973) to 35 hours, with murder at 248 hours1. Texas ranks 46th on per-capita indigent-defense spending2, and 156 Texas counties have no public defender office3. Recovered hours are not abstract; they are the difference between a reviewed file and an unreviewed one. The Axon download orchestration lane watches the eDiscovery portal under firm-staff authentication, submits the request, monitors processing, and downloads into the matter, overnight, with integrity hashes, provenance, and retries.
