Why this exists
Captions Are Accessibility. Captions Are Also The Transcript The AI-Search Era Runs On.
The primary reason a venue captions a livestream is accessibility. Deaf and hard-of-hearing audience members deserve the same access to the work the venue is presenting as the hearing audience. That reason is permanent and central. It does not need an additional justification. A second-order consequence, increasingly important in 2026, is that captioned content is indexable content. A podcast episode with a clean transcript is dramatically more likely to surface in an AI-assistant answer than a podcast episode that is only an audio file. A YouTube livestream archive with closed captions becomes searchable, citeable, and discoverable. The live captioning the venue runs for the audience that needs it produces, as a byproduct, the transcript that drives the venue’s AI-era discoverability. Both reasons matter.

Step 01
Audio Source
The Director Console’s program audio, or a dedicated mic feed where the venue prefers one, encodes to PCM16 mono at the sample rate Deepgram’s streaming ASR expects. The encoding happens in the browser at the venue. No additional appliance.
Step 02
Deepgram Streaming ASR
The PCM16 stream feeds Deepgram’s streaming ASR endpoint under the tenant’s authenticated session. Deepgram returns interim and final transcripts in stream. The operator surface displays them as they arrive, with low-confidence words flagged.
Step 03
Source And Display Language
The captioning surface lets the operator set the source language (spoken on stage) and the display language (rendered in captions). For monolingual events the two are the same. For bilingual or multilingual events, the surface supports separate source detection and display rendering.
Step 04
Font And Position Controls
The operator sets font size, font weight, color, background opacity, and on-screen position for burn-in captions. A panel discussion benefits from larger, higher-contrast captions; a music performance with sparse vocals benefits from a more discreet position. Operator-tunable per session.
Step 05
Confidence Threshold
The operator configures a confidence threshold below which a word is flagged as uncertain. Uncertain words can render with a visual indicator the operator may choose to suppress, or can be suppressed from the live display while remaining in the archive transcript for post-event correction.
Step 06
Translation Targets
For multilingual audiences, the operator can configure translation targets. Spanish for a bilingual Bexar County program, Mandarin for an event with international guests, ASL companion captioning where an interpreter is also present. Translated captions render as a parallel surface alongside the source-language caption.
Step 07
Burn-In Or Sidecar
Captions can be burned into the broadcast feed for audiences without caption controls, or rendered as sidecar files (WebVTT and SRT) attached to the recording for archive-side display. Most venues run both.

Operator Presence
A captioning operator is part of the call sheet. A real role in the Role Responsibility Map, with credentials and training tracked in the Crew Portal. The operator monitors the live captions, manages the confidence threshold, and reviews the post-event transcript before it lands in the archive.

Archive
The post-event transcript persists in the canonical capture record. The transcript is the source the podcast lane reads when producing show notes, that The Creative Studio reads when producing clip-quotation graphics, and that AI assistants read when surfacing the event in answer to a future question.
